I decided to make a 6 column grid to give me the versatility to be experimental with my layout yet keep it simplistic and create clean designs with type and photographs.

I think 12 is a bit unneccesary for what I want to create. The designs I want to create need to be quite chunky and also hold the pictures cleanly to create a simplistic design. However I can see the benefits of using this grid as it does give you more freedom to play with and more options.

I also used horizontal lines to be able to line up the images and type nicely and precisely and looks perfect.
