OUGD301 – Evaluation

At the beginning of this module I was really excited to be able to create and adapt you own briefs, allowing me to create a brief, which fulfilled the wants I had of what I wanted to create for this year. I think I did achieve this I chose the right briefs with a few alterations, which allowed me to create designs in my style.

Brief one started with the Body Shop brief, I wanted from this brief to create a set of packaging, which would look clean and natural, as packaging was lacking in my portfolio. Overall with this brief I think I should have spent less time thinking about the concept and idea of what it could look like and straight away started making experiments, then I think this brief would have been taken much further.

Brief 2 was the Betty Brown brief which was to brand a traditional cafĂ©. I think with this brief I wasn’t really thinking of what I wanted from it, more of what I could make it look like. Therefore when the competition briefs came out I found that that brief gave me more design control than Betty Brown, so took my focus over to the competition brief.

Brief 3 was the photographer brief, this started out as wedding stationary and slowly adapted into branding the photographer as I wanted to create a publication, which I got to do. I am happy with this brief yet I think more consideration should have gone into the packaging of the smaller books.

Brief 4 was the live brief woven; I was really excited for this brief and really got into the ideas aspect from it and came up with several strong concepts for the client to chose from. I hope I get the chance to continue with this brief!

Brief 5 the DJ branding, which started off as a smaller brief but escalated into a much bigger brief than anticipated. I am really happy with this brief, however one small thing, which I would change, is in the CD packaging it needs a material on the inside to hold the CD tighter. I would also come up with different series of posters.

Brief 6 is the competition brief for Ministry of Sound. The initial brief was to create 3 posters for 3 months worth of events. So I expanded this brief a little and created the flyers, wristbands, tickets and graphics for inside the club.

Overall within this module I believe I have worked harder than before to create briefs of which not only answer the brief but also allow me to create designs that I would want in my portfolio. I also believe I know have the taste of how hard I am going to constantly work through out my FMP and learnt to just do work and experiment and print throughout without thinking over and over an idea.

Final Boards - DJ Branding

Final Boards - Waven

Final Boards - Wedding Stationary

Final Boards - Body Shop

Ministry of Sound in context..

I thought that the design would look awesome as the lights themselves and have the building lit with the graphics.
Also the photographs that are taken in the club will need to have the logo on to promote the event..
The room itself I thought would also look good with the designs lot on the wall and also move around the room inside of being static graphics.

Of course there would need to be promotion on the website which I think would probably be big to launch the events.

Wristbands for the events. I have used three as examples of what they will look like for each month, the only thing which would change is the date.

CD & Business Cards..

I want to keep everything in theme, and therefore I have chosen from designs the black CD then I am going to foil block the business cards in black to give them a shine and make them more interesting to pick up and look at over other designs of business cards.

Packaging Development..

I have decided to create the packaging again and I think this is much better than using grey card as it looks clean and modern and interesting to want to open to see what it is.

Packaging Idea..

From my early ideas sheet I had picked the idea of a square box that would hold the business card on the front of the packaging as I think this would be most effective for promotion and also to adapt to letterboxes etc.

Although I like the idea I am not sure about the grey. I think the grey makes it a bit bland sort of thing, it is quite a down colour which it should be quite an exciting thing to get these through the post.

Smaller books..

As I want the photographer to send the books out as a mail out I have covered them in cellophane, however I need to create a simplistic elegant packaging to be sent out in.

Packaging for the CD

I wanted a sleek packaging which would intrigue people and also look highly proffessional.

Alongside the ideas for the packaging I decided that I wanted to use the lasercutter and test things out on there, so this persuaded me to experiment with the black plastic as I thought this would look really cool.

I really really like the packaging!

I decided to engrave the  logo into the CD packaging and I think this is very effective.

However I foolishly did not add felt in the inside of the packaging so the CD is not as protected as it would/should be. Therefore this is something that if I was to do it again I would make it much more secure.

Foiling just does not want to work..

I wanted to create a set of poster to be in store as a point of sale and I wanted to put white on the brown card, however it jut does not want to co-operate!
Better Idea for business card..

I firstly thought of quite a simplistic looking design with the logo on the front and details on the back. However I then re thought the business card and decided to create business cards like polaroid pictures. Which I think is really effective.

The business cards..

I really like this idea of the pattern staying in the same place on the front and back of the cards and then the details along the top. I think I will foil block these to give them a shine as I think this will then fit in best with the letterhead and design I am going for.

Foil blocking the back corner..

I have foil blocked the back corner to add more interest and value to the letterhead. I really like how it has turned out as it is different and could attract people to it.

Quiet street promotion..

For the Ministry of Sound brief I want to create a secret campaign where people see enough of the designs around town to get them interested and wonder what it is and then create the main poster with the information on.

I want to create stickers to stick around town and then have these posters to relate them to Ministry of Sound. And I do really like these posters!

Wristbands.. I have designed the wristbands given to the guests at the door once they have paid and handed their tickets over.

They are quite long to incorporate any shaped wrist, then included the date and also the event.

Open publication - Free publishing - More wristbands

These are my favourite designs as when printed they look the best as the type goes all around the wrist and also on the second one it covers the whole wristband which looks good too.

Designs for the tickets..

Open publication - Free publishing - More design

In my opinion this is the most effective design for the ticket and I think that I have got the hierarchy right, however I would like to edit the costing and times section so your eye is led to it..

I think I prefer this design..

Flyer design for all three months..

Open publication - Free publishing - More flyers

I am happy with these designs, and I want to print them onto a kind of satin paper to give it that sheen.
Added type along the bottom &  Hierarchy..

I added the information about the tickets to the front, even though they are on the front I don't think they will be read to last as no one wants to read small print on a flyer unless the other information interests them.
Portrait flyer..

I am really happy with this design and the type is so much more visible like this along with the Ministry of Sound logo. Now to test the other backgrounds.

Back of Flyers..

Open publication - Free publishing - More flyer

Designing for the back of flyers is starting to bring up quite a few issues with the september background as the type can not be entirely read. Through testing various different layouts I have found maybe a solution and that is to have a portrait flyer.

The portrait flyer seems to work much better than the landscape one and the type of 'Ministry of sound london' can be seen clearly.

Front of Flyers..
For my flyers I wanted to have the main front simple and just have the title of the nights name..

Then for the back I want to have all the information for that month on; all about what is going on and who is playing.. Relating fairly closely to the poster designs to keep the theme.
